The WaterSens solution using Opsens Solutions fiber optic pressure sensors has been designed specifically for monitoring liquid levels. Based on patented fiber optic technology, these sensors are extremely robust and stable. They are also immune to electromagnetic interference and lightning, and do not drift over time.
The measurement principle is simple: the liquid level is calculated from the hydrostatic pressure, which corresponds to the thrust exerted by the height of the liquid due to the force of gravity. This pressure is determined using a unique, patented technology based on Fabry-Pérot optical interferometry. This technology, known as WLPI (White Light Polarization Interferometry), is based on phase modulation of light, the most sensitive method for fiber optic measurement.
Significant advantages
- Sensors are drift-free, and require no maintenance over their useful life, which is measured in decades. As a result, no on-site intervention is required to validate the correct operation of the sensors, which are often deployed in hard-to-reach spaces;
- Being entirely dielectric, optical technology is unaffected by direct impacts or the indirect effects of lightning. As a result, a sensor will never be “fried”, which is particularly useful for dams with electrical installations that have the effect of increasing the incidence of lightning strikes;
- Coupled with a simple stand-alone power system with solar panel and battery, the measurement system can be deployed in remote areas where it is not possible to power the unit from the electrical grid;
- Configurable, the WaterSens solution is easy to automate for variable-rate measurements;
- The solution offers multiple communication interfaces to add remote data transfer tools ranging from Wi-Fi to satellite antenna.
